The Asia Europe Journal, the quarterly periodical of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), is one of the Foundation’s flagship projects and a premier peer-reviewed publication. Launched in 2003, the Journal’s objective is to serve as a platform linking inputs from the academia in Asia and Europe with perspectives from policy makers in both regions. It is devoted to publishing interdisciplinary and intercultural studies and research on Asia and Europe in the social sciences and humanities. Fields of interest include various aspects of bilateral relationships, comparative studies, Asian area studies from a European perspective or European studies from an Asian perspective. Each volume is intended to focus on one major subject such as security, historical experiences, cultural perceptions, civic rights, gender issues, regional integration, development, media or other areas of bi-regional interest. Since its inception, the Journal has strived to set the standard for active debate. It has been an academic platform for more than 200 authors from Asia and Europe. While each issue is introduced with timely topical essays by senior statesmen and politicians who in past issues have included Lee Kuan Yew (Minister Mentor of Singapore), Dermot Ahern (Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ireland), Fidel Valdez Ramos (former President of the Philippines) and Javier Solana (Secretary General of the Council of the European Union), the scholarly papers and book reviews are contributed by leading academics and young, ambitious authors from both regions. ASEF invites Guest Editors and Co-Editors to support the preparation of each issue. If the Guest Editor is from Asia, the Co-Editor is from Europe. With the help of a strong international Advisory Board, all articles are refereed through a “double-blind” process. The journal is wholeheartedly committed to academic freedom. It goes without saying that the articles do not commit ASEF, ASEM partners or the Advisory and Editorial Board, but reflect exclusively the views of the authors. On any point of legitimate disagreement the Editor will gladly accept comments to be published in reaction. In fact, in order to stimulate the intercontinental debate our readers are strongly encouraged to submit their views and contribute to an active and lively exchange. The Asia Europe Journal is made available in digitised format to about 4.500 institutions worldwide, which include numerous universities, colleges, and libraries. It is published by publisher Springer, Heidelberg, and abstracted and indexed in ECONIS, EconLit, Expanded Academic, JEL on CD, Journal of Economic Literature, Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) and Social Science Research Network (SSRN).
